Abbreviation

[edit]

Hi everybody, I've a question. If The Right (La Destra) has always been abbreviated "LD", why The Left (La Sinistra) had to be abbreviated "Sin"? Why can't we change it in "LS"? -- Nick.mon (talk) 07:49, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have always supported the opportunity of referring to The Left as LS, per consistency and sources.
Thus, I strongly support your proposal. Thank you! --Checco (talk) 08:07, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should find sources where it is abbreviated as LS. There's no need of consistency between the two. As far as I remember User:Scia Della Cometa said there are sources for "Sin", but never gave them. I think this is the perfect occasion to settle this. --Ritchie92 (talk) 08:25, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you're right. I looked at on some polls and I found this one where it's abbreviated LS. In many of them it's simply written as "Sinistra" or "La Sinistra". -- Nick.mon (talk) 09:07, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As there are sources for LS, like the one mentioned by User:Nick.mon, it all comes down to consistency: LS! --Checco (talk) 11:12, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are sources using Sin: here. --Ritchie92 (talk) 12:45, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There aren't "sources", there is "a source". Anyway, at the time I restored "Sin" in place of "LS" (which was not at all a consolidated abbreviation) because the first one was certainly the most diffused and because there had been no agreement on which abbreviation to use: obviously, without agreement, the most common abbreviation must be used, namely "Sin". I still support "Sin", but it is obvious that if the majority of users want to use another abbreviation for this list, then the one on which there is the agreement prevails.--Scia Della Cometa (talk) 21:03, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a quite difficult situation, why The Left was abbreviated very few times (in the few articles about it, the party was simply named "La Sinistra" or "Sinistra"). In many cases, we simply abbreviate parties indicating the first letters of the words which composed their names, so LS should be the most "logic" choice. Anyway I known that it isn't quite simple to decide. -- Nick.mon (talk) 16:36, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with User:Nick.mon that "LS" is the most logic choice. "Sin" was adopted without consensus. Let's go back to "LS". As User:Ritchie92 said, "this is the perfect occasion to settle this". Let's do it! --Checco (talk) 06:20, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would say, if more sources use Sin than LS we should use Sin. We haven't checked this yet. I am waiting for User:Scia Della Cometa's sources. --Ritchie92 (talk) 07:19, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It is not easy to evaluate the quantity of sources in this case. Google researches would not be accurate. In my view, this is more a matter of consensus and consistency rather than sources. However, there are several hits for "La Sinistra (LS)", basically none for "La Sinistra (Sin)" (the only ones are for "sin" as a preposition). --Checco (talk) 08:15, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
"SIN" was used by Youtrend and some polling institutes when the 2019 European elections took place, I honestly didn't know there were sources for "LS" too. In any case, there is no official or predominant abbreviation for La Sinistra, therefore it can be decided through users consensus. --Scia Della Cometa (talk) 19:44, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As I showed, there is a predominant abbreviation and that is LS. However, most sources use neither LS nor Sin, thus it is fair to choose the abbreviation through consensus. User:Nick.mon, User:SDC and I have expressed a preference. What about other users, especially User:Ritchie92? --Checco (talk) 06:18, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would go with the sources, even though I find LS to be weird (using a capital letter to abbreviate the article "la"?), and "Sin" more expressive and understandable in reading. However let's go with the sources. --Ritchie92 (talk) 07:06, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
My preference is for LS rather than Sin, as there seems to be more precedent in existing searches for LS.--Autospark (talk) 14:15, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
